This pen and holder is from the shop(s) of DonChetta and is the birthday pen for John Solberg. It was a collaboration between Don Ward and Anthony Turchetta. The pen is a titanium gold sierra and the snake skin blank was cast by Don and the pen was turned by Don. The blank was cast in the now infamous "HF pressure paint pot".
Anthony made the pen funnel from red malle and the base is a burl cap of red mallee. This was fun for both of us and John says the pen will not dissappear from his desk because his wife is not a snake lover. Happy Birthday John.
Two exactly dimensioned square pieces of stock are place on top of the other. These are then cut on the bandsaw at the same time. The woods used for Anthony’s pen blank is American Elm and Curly Massaranduba.

A template is used to keep the cuts consistent. This is actually the first step before cutting.
One side of the cut from the bottom is mated with the opposite side of the cut from the top. A strip of veneer is used between the two pieces to compensate for the saw kerf. All of this assembly is glued together.
In order to have centered “eyes”, the process is repeated. The eyes were offset about 3/8" from end to end to create a different pattern.
The whole process is repeated over again on the other side and yields blanks like this.

The blank was made intentionally large so we could make a big pen. The pen body was made large because Anthony has big hands. The stem and nib for the pen were turned from black Corian.
There was some of the pen blank left over so it was glued up to make a base that was square turned. The pen funnel is turned from glued up Corian.
The finished project for Anthony’s birthday.
In keeping with Anthony’s prim and proper demeanor, we picked an appropriate card to celebrate his birthday.
